Rainwater Collection Basics for a Cabin

How to catch, store, and use rainwater at a cabin — without overcomplicating your first system.

Rainwater isn’t my only water source, but it’s the one that surprised me with how useful it is once the basics are in place. I use it for garden irrigation, cleaning, and as backup when the well pump acts up.

A small collection system doesn’t need to be fancy. It needs clean storage, a way to keep debris out, and honest expectations about what the water is safe for.

Can you collect rain where you live?

Before buying tanks, check local rules. Some areas restrict rainwater collection; others require permits for large storage. Homeowners associations and health departments may have opinions too.

I checked county guidelines before installing anything. It took one phone call and saved me from sizing tanks I’d have had to remove.

Also look at your annual rainfall and dry spells. Collection works best where rain is somewhat regular. If you get six months of drought, rainwater is a supplement — not your primary supply.

Where the water comes from

Roof collection is the most common setup for cabins. Metal roofs work well; asphalt shingles can work but may add sediment. Clean the roof seasonally and avoid collecting the first rain after a long dry period if the roof is dirty.

Gutters and downspouts channel water to storage. Screen the gutter outlet or downspout entrance to block leaves and pine needles — I clean mine monthly during fall or nothing flows.

A first-flush diverter sends the initial dirty water away before filling your tank. The first few gallons off a dry roof carry dust, pollen, and bird droppings. Diverters aren’t required, but they improve water quality with minimal effort.

Ground catchment (tarps, land contours) is possible but harder to keep clean. I don’t use it for anything that touches food or skin.

Storage and tanks

Store water in food-grade containers — tanks or barrels labeled safe for potable use, even if you won’t drink from them. Non-food-grade plastic can leach chemicals.

Size depends on catchment area and rainfall. A rough starting point: one inch of rain on 1,000 square feet of roof yields about 600 gallons. Most cabin roofs don’t capture all of that — overflow, evaporation, and first-flush loss eat a chunk.

I started with two 55-gallon barrels and upgraded to a 300-gallon tank once I knew my usage. Starting smaller let me learn without a big upfront cost.

Place tanks on level ground or a simple pad. Full water is heavy — 55 gallons weighs over 450 pounds. Plan access for filling watering cans or connecting a hose.

Filtering and what the water is safe for

Rainwater off a roof is not automatically safe to drink without treatment. I use collected rain for:

  • Garden watering
  • Washing tools and outdoor gear
  • Emergency non-potable backup

For drinking, you’d need filtration and disinfection appropriate to your local health guidance — UV, chlorination, or a certified filter system. That’s beyond what I cover here, and requirements vary by jurisdiction.

At minimum, screen out debris at the inlet and keep tanks covered and dark to limit algae growth. I drain and rinse my barrels each spring.

Winter considerations

Frozen tanks crack. I drain outdoor barrels before hard freeze and keep one smaller indoor container as winter backup for non-potable use.

If you’re in a mild climate, buried or insulated tanks extend the season. Where I am, outdoor storage is seasonal only.

Heat tape and insulation help for lines running to tanks — same principles as keeping your water line from freezing.

What this guide won’t cover
